Welcome to our baroque city on the Main
Würzburg is pure joie de vivre: shaped by centuries of history, gentle vineyards and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. To make your stay unforgettable, we have put together our very own favourite spots, Würzburg tips and genuine insider recommendations for you.
Whatever the season of your visit: here you will find the best things to do in Würzburg before dinner or for the perfect end to the evening afterwards. Plan your personal adventure around your visit to the Backöfele.
The all-year classics
Würzburg's sights
Three places that delight in every season, all just a few minutes' walk from the Backöfele.
Marvel at a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Würzburg Residence
The Würzburg Residence is an absolute must for every culture lover. The baroque masterpiece is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and impresses with its famous staircase and the ceiling fresco by Tiepolo.
Be sure to stroll through the beautifully landscaped Court Garden as well. The artfully trimmed fruit trees and hidden arbours are especially magical in the evening light.
If you are in town in mid-April, a true natural spectacle awaits you. That is when the famous Japanese cherry blossom turns the Court Garden into a sea of pink. Stroll beneath the blossoming crowns, breathe in the scent and take your perfect holiday photo before rounding off the day with us at the Backöfele.
Earn the best view
Marienberg Fortress: counting church towers
Hike up to the historic Marienberg Fortress. The path through the vineyards gets your circulation going. Once at the top, the whole city lies at your feet. Anyone who masters the steep climb has truly earned the dinner and a cool glass of wine with us afterwards. After all, hiking makes you thirsty and hungry.
Find a spot on the old fortress wall and let your gaze wander over the sea of rooftops. Würzburg is considered one of the cities with the most churches in Germany. Take a closer look: how many of the roughly 60 church towers and chapels can you spot and count from up here?
Peace in the heart of the city
The hidden Lusamgärtchen
Looking for a quiet spot in the middle of the city centre? Behind the Neumünster crucifix lies a tiny, almost forgotten courtyard. It is the resting place of the minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide. Lovers still lay roses here to this day.
From there it is only a few steps to us in the Ursulinergasse.
Würzburg summer fairy tale
Sunshine, the Main & Franconian wine
When the days are long, life happens by the river. Our summer tips for connoisseurs.
A glass above the river
Celebrate the Brückenschoppen
A stroll across the Old Main Bridge is as much a part of Würzburg as wine in a Bocksbeutel bottle. This is where locals and travellers meet for a glass of wine right above the river, with a view of the fortress and the twelve stone statues of saints.
The heart of this tradition is the bridge wine service at the little sales window of the popular mainwein wine bistro. When the sun goes down and things get really busy on balmy evenings, the little window occasionally stops handing out glasses. Best bring your own wine glasses. Or even better: talk to our team! You can have a well-chilled bottle of wine and glasses packed for you right here at the restaurant. Then stroll to the bridge at your leisure, enjoy the view of the fortress and raise your glass with a smile to the twelve stone saints.
A day trip on the Main
Cast off: aboard the “Alte Liebe” to Veitshöchheim
A great Würzburg tip for a relaxed day trip is a little cruise downstream. Board the charming passenger ship “Alte Liebe” at the Main quay (Alter Kranen landing stage). The boat trip to Veitshöchheim takes you past picturesque vineyards to the famous rococo garden. After the return journey, stroll along the sunny riverbank back into the bustle of the city, ideally straight to us.
The perfect refuge from the heat
Historic cellar worlds
When the summer heat settles over the city, escaping underground is the best insider tip. Enjoy a historic guided tour and the perfect way to cool down in the huge wooden barrel cellar of the traditional Staatlicher Hofkeller beneath the Residence, while strolling through the historic cellar passages of the Juliusspital winery or on a voyage of discovery at the Bürgerspital winery.
Be sure to wander into the beautiful, shady park of the Juliusspital winery. Hidden among the greenery is a wonderful, delightfully uncomplicated wine service. Here you get excellent Franconian wines straight from the winemaker at fair prices. Grab a glass and get in the mood for your evening with us at the Backöfele.
Würzburg winter magic
Romance & twinkling lights
The scent of mulled wine, lantern light and afterwards a warm seat with us: this is how beautiful Würzburg is in winter.
Advent in the old town
Christmas markets in and around Würzburg
Against the historic backdrop of the Falkenhaus and the Gothic Marienkapelle, the old town smells of roasted almonds and mulled wine. The Würzburg Christmas market is the perfect place for a romantic winter stroll before you let us spoil you with good food in the warmth.
Anyone looking for a true Franconian Christmas fairy tale should visit the magical old village of Sommerhausen on the Advent weekends. The residents of this historic artists' village open their private gates, courtyards and old vaulted cellars to artisans and craftspeople.
Easy to reach without a car: bus lines 554 and 555 take you from Würzburg's old town straight to the action and back every hour, in only around 20 minutes.
With halberd and lantern
The historic night watchman tour
Follow the night watchman in traditional costume, with halberd and lantern, through the mysteriously lit alleys of the old town. In Franconian dialect he tells anecdotes from the history of the city and its citizens.
By prior arrangement, the night watchman will pick you up right at our door after an aperitif in our Chase Bar. Or he will bring you straight to us at the Backöfele after the tour to warm up and feast. Simply mention it when making your reservation.
